Kiss Me is the 17th book in the Fool’s Gold series by Susan Mallery. This review is so difficult for me to write because I am such a fan of the Fool’s Gold series. And I was waiting for this book to come out. It has all of the things I love about romance novels in it…cowboys, strong female friendships, family drama and bonding. It had all the elements and most of them were really well done. But the biggest problem I couldn’t overcome was that I didn’t like the main couple. When you care more about the stories of the supporting characters than the hero and heroine, it’s not good. The story’s heroine, Phoebe Kitzke, is an LA real estate agent who ends up on the Nicholson Ranch for a cattle drive with her best friend. Phoebe is a strange bird. She started off okay but then began talking to animals when she arrived at the ranch. I mean, she was having entire heart-to-heart conversations with them. It was just a little too weird for me.
The ranch owner Zane is her best friend’s step brother. He has set up the cattle drive to teach his younger brother a lesson. Zane is not happy about having to bring a bunch of “greenhorns” out on a cattle drive. In fact, he’s not happy about much of anything. This guy is not a charmer and I couldn’t figure out why Phoebe fell in love with him. For the first ¾ of the book all he did was grunt and get angry and think about getting into Phoebe’s pants. It wasn’t until the very end of the book (I’m talking 90% of the way through) that I even started to understand and like him a little bit. But it was way too late by then. Needless to say, I did not enjoy the love story in this book.
But there were some highlights…
While I didn’t like the character of Phoebe, I really liked her best friend Maya. Maya is the heroine of the next book, so I am looking forward to that. The family dynamic of Maya and Zane and Chase (the youngest brother) was done really well and I was actually rooting for that relationship to figure itself out long before I was rooting for Zane and Phoebe. And Gladys, a character who is usually just comic relief with her sidekick Eddie, had a beautiful moment that almost brought me to tears. There was also a beautiful side story about characters who were not from Fool’s Gold but were along for the cattle drive. I almost dismissed this story at the beginning, but it actually ended up being one of my favorite parts of this book.
But I just couldn’t warm up to Zane and Phoebe in this one and so their romance seemed pretty secondary to me. I was really disappointed. But, of course, it will not deter me from reading the Fool’s Gold series and I hope Maya’ s love story restores my faith in the series I enjoy so much.

Zane Nicholson has managed to bring his family ranch back to profitability in the years since his father's death while struggling with his relationship with his younger half-brother Chase in an attempt to keep him from making the same mistakes Zane feels he has made. Meanwhile, Chase and his electronics wizard buddy's website design for a trail drive vacation package for a class project has gone out on the internet. When they suddenly start receiving reservations, their attempt to build on the money received by investing in a "sure thing" on the stock market fails.
When Zane learns of it, he decides to use the trail ride fiasco to teach Chase a lesson - knowing how much Chase hates the farm and anything related to cattle, he makes him go along. In Los Angeles, Phoebe Kiske is suspended from her job as a real estate agent for 30 days while awaiting a Board hearing concerning her license. When she tells her best friend Maya - who happens to be Zane's ex-stepsister and Chase's half-sister - Maya convinces Phoebe to go on the trial ride with her. Although Phoebe is a true city girl and has never been on a horse, she agrees.
The trial rides also includes Fool's Gold's famous isters Eddy and Gladys, a vegetarian couple, another couple dragooned into bringing two young kids from a foster home, Zane, and, of course, Chase.
Susan Mallery brings in several familiar Fool's Gold characters while developing new characters and situations and expanding our knowledge of Zane and Chase, who had been minor characters in earlier books in this series. The situations and characters are quite believable. I like this story a lot.
I liked this book, but didn't love it. The h, Phoebe, I think was supposed to be written as quirky, but came across more like a young teen girl instead of someone in her late 20's. There were so many characters and sub stories going on that it took away from the main story. The main story was very far fetched as well. I don't think you could take a bunch of people that don't know how to ride horses, tell them less than basic info on doing so and then everyone, including 2 small children, take off on an adventure to drive cattle. Then the water rises and all these people help keep the cattle from drowning by leading them in pouring rain and across a raging river. And Phoebe having conversations with the head steer.....just really hokey. I did like Zane's character. I felt for what he had gone through and what he was trying to navigate through with his brother. I also really liked his and Phoebe's connection, but I think it was maybe a total of 2 weeks and bam they love each other and are going to get married. I would have enjoyed a different way for these two to connect and fall in love. The craziness of the story took away from the love story.
