The story line had great promise but was poorly executed. All the previously dead characters were resurrected with extremely implausible back stories and the reactions to these resurrections as well as the explanations thereof, are nothing short of astounding:1. Why would a loving mother fail to contact her grownup son for over 2 decades, despite longing to meet him?
2. How can a daughter raised under the impression her mother is dead, "dissolve into peals of laughter" when finding out her father lied for over 20 years, took her away from her well to do mother, twin sister and extended family and brought her up in deprivation while precariously wandering around the country gambling for a living? How can she maintain her good humor, once it's explained that it was all due to a "silly" fight, and her father's wounded ego, which he soothed with random women met along the way over 2 decades?
3. How could a woman whose husband abandoned her and took one of her daughters away for 20 years, out of sheer ego, be waiting anxiously for and take her idiot spouse back after 2 decades, no questions asked?
4. How could a daughter deprived of her twin and her father for her entire life, feel no resentment towards said father, and eagerly go live with him, after his prodigal return from a wounded ego trip that lasted 20 years?
Utterly unbelievable plot elements ruin what had the potential to be a great novel. Very unlike MJP, who is usually extremely skilled at weaving her tales. What went wrong?

Loving A Lost Lord Lost Lords Mary Jo Putney 9781420103281 Books Reviews
Amnesia is not a sturdy trope to lean on, and it's done poorly here. But once I accepted that it was the central point of Adam's character, it turned out that I liked him, and the bulk of his interactions with Mariah. Whom I didn't care for, because I also don't have much patience for a liar whose one, simple lie snowballs out of control with potentially devastating consequences.
I mean, she had sex with him under the completely false pretense of already being his wife, when she wasn't. Amnesia really messes with consent issues, doesn't it?
But Adam's charm is really the only reason this isn't a one-star review, because I also found the chapters from Adam's friends' POV, the plotline where they're searching for him, incredibly dull. By halfway through, I was skimming them, because of course they were going to find him, and the tale of how they did it wasn't exactly riveting.
This one doesn't go very deep.
The heroine finds the hero floating near the shore and hauls him in. He has lost his mistress memory, and as she is being pestered by a suspicious fellow, she claims the hero is her husband. She keeps the hero at arm's length saying they need to get to know each other again, though not in the biblical sense - yet.
In the meantime the hero's buddies are trying to find the hero's body. They understood he was killed in an explosion. Once they find him it is time to get him back to London and his responsibilities -- he is a duke after all.
But the couple has fallen in love, even though the heroine confessed that they weren't married and told him he whole story. She has led a rather ramshackle life -- her father was a card player. The hero insists they are engaged and has her go to London with him.
Well- meaning and not so well-meaning relatives show up, and some attempts are made on the couple's lives.
Mariah and her father have acquired a wonderful estate. Charles Clarke won the estate in a card game. It will be the first permanent home Mariah has known. After her father leaves to go make peace with his family, Mariah is informed that he is dead. She is devastated. The man providing this information is the man who lost the estate and he plans to force Mariah to marry him in order that he can regain his property. Not a nice guy.
Through some unusual circumstances, Mariah finds a man who is near death. He has washed up on the beach and appears to have been in the water for a very long time. When he is conscious and admits he has no memory of his name or his past. Mariah tells him he is her husband and his name is Adam.
In reality, the man is a wealthy duke. When friends find him, after sharing their stories of the past brings very few reminders for Adam, he is basically still an amnesiac.
Adam is told that the accident which created the ship sinking and his being thrown into the sea was no accident. Someone created the explosion on purpose.
Mariah and Adam are interesting characters. They both had childhoods which were anything but normal. Mariah lived a life of wandering around the country with her gambler father. Adam was emotionally abused because his father was married to an Indian woman and that made Adam different from what the English public were willing to accept. Both of them are intelligent people who share a strong sense of empathy for their fellow creatures.
Adam is a very heroic hero.
The secondary characters add a great deal to the story. Adam's friends are willing to do nearly anything to protect him. Each of them are colorful and are introduced in a manner that makes me believe they will appear in the Lost Lords series. They convince Adam to return to London to move back into his life and responsibilities. Even very minor characters are created to add texture to the fabric of the story.
The plot starts out wonderfully. I am a fan of Ms Putney's writings. This is a well developed story, but it becomes too busy toward the end. Some of the events are improbable even for a romance novel. There is mystery, there are attempts at murder and all in all a great deal of action.
I like this book, and I am well aware that I will fall under Ms Putney's spell with her next book that I read.
